Playa Gigante

We have changed the plans a bit. It seemed as if every backpacker from Costa Rica to El Salvador converged on San Juan del Sur for New Years and to avoid a surge of tourist moving on to Isla Ometepa (which was our next stop) we detoured up to Playa Gigante. This super secluded beach town is only occupied by 500 people and accessible by rugged dirt road. Today I rented a board and we walked about an hour north, passed completely empty beautiful white sand beaches, to Playa Colorado a world class surfing beach with (of course) no waves today.

The place we are staying, Hotel Brio, is amazing. Check out their website at hotelbrio.com. The place is environmentally sustainable and truly imitates a positive way of investing in tourism abroad. Interestingly, the owner is a professor of Environmental Studies from the USA.
